HelpAttack! Adds Facebook to Give to Nonprofit Organizations

HelpAttack!, an Austin-based startup, offers nonprofit organizations the opportunity to collect monthly donations based on their supporters' social media use. Through the online service, donors can give to their favorite philanthropic causes simply through their use of popular social networks.

The online giving site, launched on a Twitter-based pledge system, has now expanded its potential impact by growing its service to include Facebook user activity.

"HelpAttack! was created to encourage the act of giving to nonprofits through basic, day-to-day online activities," states Ehren Foss, HelpAttack!'s CEO. "Expanding HelpAttack!'s giving options to include Facebook tremendously increases the potential opportunity for nonprofits, while making it even easier for donors to give to personal causes on a daily basis. Based on public data*, if just 1% of US Facebook users pledged 10 cents per action, that would infuse nonprofits with $13.5 Million in 30 days - an amount generated simply by online activity that is already taking place."

To pledge to a nonprofit on HelpAttack.com, visitors allow the site access to their Facebook profile. Once logged in, users find their favorite cause and create a pledge based on their average Facebook use. Currently, HelpAttack! counts wall posts, "likes," photo uploads, video uploads, and event RSVPs in a donor's 30-day pledge. HelpAttack! retrieves content from Facebook in order to estimate, and then count, these activities. Respecting user privacy, HelpAttack! does not display any actual Facebook content - only the counts.

The addition of Facebook and it's 500 million plus users is a big step in the company's intended growth. HelpAttack! has plans to engage with more social communities and online technologies, allowing people the opportunity to pledge and give across multiple platforms, in order to make this new form of donating relevant to a broader range of people who work, play and communicate online.

"We have such amazing supporters of our No More Homeless Pets mission," states Jon Dunn, Senior Manager of Online Strategy for Best Friends Animal Society. "HelpAttack! has been a wonderful way for our social media savvy supporters to give to the mission while they simply go about their daily lives on the internet."

While the donation- and socially-driven site provides organizations with a new way to receive funds from its supporters, it also offers nonprofits branded donation pages, messaging and campaign support, donor data (if approved by donor at time of pledge), and ultimately, the opportunity to reach supporters where they "live," can give, and often share their cause-oriented actions with others. Using these and other features, HelpAttack! hopes to convert online supporters into active, recurring donors.

With a growing audience, and more nonprofits wanting to use the site as an innovative way to raise funds, the site currently offers nearly 6,000 nonprofits to pledge to, with new causes being added daily. Over $8,000 has already been donated to US-based nonprofits via more than 200,000 Twitter and Facebook updates.
