Association of Fundraising Professionals to Honor Nonprofits and Philanthropists

What: The AFP – Greater NY Chapter’s National Philanthropy Day Luncheon, hosted by The New York Times - Annual celebration attended by over 300 guests from New York City’s premiere charitable organizations, including corporate and foundation leaders, philanthropists, board members, and Executive Directors.

Sponsored by the Greater NY Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), this special day is set aside every November to recognize the great contributions of volunteer leaders and donors committed to eradicating some of the city’s greatest social challenges – poverty, affordable health care, education, human rights, food security – and to creating celebrated art and culture.

“This event celebrates the spirit of giving.   It’s an opportunity for the city’s philanthropic sector to recognize and honor the individual New Yorkers and institutions whose extraordinary gifts of time, talent, and funds are transforming the communities where we live and work,” says AFP Chapter President, Myles B. Amend, Director of Development and Alumni Relations, Trinity School.

“New York City is a world leader in philanthropy with a rich history of giving.  Our philanthropic predecessors – Rockefeller, Carnegie, Annenberg – have created a legacy of institutions and organizations that make our city more beautiful, humane, and vibrant for all of its citizens. In these difficult economic times, it is more important than ever to publicly acknowledge great people doing great work for the city we love,” says Amend.

This unique format will highlight the state of the charitable giving and philanthropic sector, its pressures and expectations during the economic downturn, and the solutions charitable organizations are providing for the future.  The first annual Chamberlain Award, named in honor of the Greater NY AFP Chapter’s founder, will be presented to Penny Stoil, Co-Founder and Co-Director, Projects Plus Inc, to recognize her contributions to advancing AFP, the fundraising profession, and the success of hundreds of non-profit clients, with whom Projects Plus has helped raise over $600 million.
