“We continuously are reading reports where Ransomware is targeting organizations like charities, religious organizations and educational facilities because their data is critical to them,” said Bret Lowry, CEO of WinPatrol. “Yet they quite often lack the resources to purchase security software needed to protect their organizations properly.”
Such was the case for WildCare, an organization based in the San Francisco Bay Area that treats sick or injured animals (nearly 4,000 a year), and teaches children and adults to understand and appreciate wildlife. They were using a free trial of WinPatrol Enterprise but lacked the funds available to purchase. Upon discussing the situation with them and learning of the things they do, we donated the licenses they needed.
WildCare’s focus is on helping sick and injured wild animals, not necessarily on online security, which makes the organization’s IT manager very nervous. “Most of our organization’s staff members use their computers strictly for email and internet access,” says IT Manager Alison Hermance. “Before WinPatrol, it would have been incredibly easy for a user to click the wrong link and give a hacker easy access to ransom the organization’s entire network. This would have been a disaster!”
“With the generous donation of WinPatrol licenses for all of our users, WildCare’s databases of wildlife patients, medical treatments and, of course, our donor database are safe from ransom attacks. We’re incredibly grateful!”
After that experience we did some research and realized just how many organizations are in need. We knew we could not solve this problem on our own. So we created this challenge in hopes that by shining a light on this issue we can provide protection to at least some of the organizations in need. Working together we can help protect those who do so much for the community and ask for so little in return.
