The beginning of a new year is always time for reflection and resolutions. So let's reflect on the technology that helped nonprofits fulfill their mission in 2017. While its true there were no stunning technology breakthroughs that changed the nonprofit digital landscape there were small advances to existing tech that made it more user friendly or gave it broader appeal.
It may seem like social media is perpetually at the top of the ‘tech that has impacted nonprofits list’, but it has earned its place. Love it or hate it, social media remains the easiest and most affordable way to connect with donors.
The reason most people hate social media is that it is seen as very time consuming. One way to make social media more manageable is to use a social media management service like Buffer or Hootsuite. These services make it easy to plan and schedule posts across multiple platforms.
If you haven’t already 2018 might be the time out live streaming. Several social media channels have the ability to stream directly from the app. Use a live stream to give your donors a behind the scenes peek at your offices or a sneak preview of an upcoming event.
One way to make the most of your social media posts or email marketing campaign is to use data analytics to find out how well your posts are being received or the open rates for email campaigns.
Most donor management systems already have data analytics embedded in the program, but you can also find outside analytics programs. Using that information can help refine your appeals and hit your target market.
Crowdfunding and Peer to Peer Fundraising
Tap into the power of the crowd. Your donors are your biggest advocates and they are more than willing to campaign on your behalf. Research shows that people are more likely to give to organizations that they see their friends supporting.
While it may be awhile before crowdfunding replaces traditional fundraising campaigns, it does have its place. Use it for smaller campaigns, or to get donations for an emergency need.
Podcasts are enjoying a resurgence. They let nonprofits present information in a casual way that educates while entertaining. Podcast enthusiasts love them because they are available when they want to listen to them, whether that is at the gym, on a commute or at their desks during lunch.
Text to Give/Email
Old school, yes, but still relevant.
First text to give, it is still the best way to capture donors who want to give in the moment. Texting to give has streamlined and it is now easier than ever to establish a text campaign and to get the word out to your donors.
Email campaigns, okay, so no one likes and inbox flooded with appeals. However, if your organization uses data analytics you can craft an appeal that will be directed to those most likely to click and follow the call to action.
With the new year comes new opportunities to use technology to run a successful campaign.
