Search engine optimization (SEO) is an important part of setting up your web site and allows people to find you without directly typing your URL into the address bar of their browser. Basically, when they go to Google or another search engine and type in what they're looking for, say a nonprofit organization serving your clientele in your city, you want your web site to be one of the first that comes up in their search results pages.

For a few years now, I have been writing these Tech Tips, offering suggestions on what nonprofits can do to use technology to reach out to constituents, manage day-to-day functions, and simply make life a little easier. In all of these things, the nonprofit organization is often struggling to do the same things as the for-profit world, only with a much smaller budget, outdated equipment, and uncertain funding. In the never-ending quest to save money, nonprofits have to get pretty creative. We rely on volunteers to do things that for-profit companies would pay thousands of dollars to get done. We work for ridiculously low wages in pursuit of the greater good. We even spend a fair amount of time calculating just how much of every donation goes toward direct services, so our supporters know that they are making a difference.
