Nonprofits Pick Social Media Stars

When choosing who to partner with many charities are forgoing traditional stars to partner with social media stars, reports the Chronicle of Philanthropy. A recent DoSomething.org anti-teen pregnancy campaign featuring YouTube stars Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox drove 51,000 people to the DoSomething.org site, which accounted for over 33% of the signups. Comcast Awards Grants

In 2014 Comcast donated $500,000 to New England charities, reports the Hartford Courant. The Comcast Foundation distributed grants to 21 nonprofits in New England. A majority of the organizations receiving grants focused on digital literacy and community building. The grants ranged from $10,000 to $50,000. Read more...

Digital NEST brings technology to young women and minorities in small farming towns in California and offers a safe environment to learn how to use the technology. Charity Keeps Kids with Cancer Connected

At the annual Robert W. Baird Seminar, the Wise Investor group raised $21,000 for a local Reston, Virginia nonprofit HopeCam, reports Connection Newspaper. HopeCam uses technology to children suffering from cancer overcome social isolation. HopeCam provides the child with a tablet, internet connection if necessary and then helps the child’s school establish a regular connection with the child. Read more...

Nonprofits Still Lag in Digital and Online Resources

According to Associations Now, the Nonprofit Technology Network and Care2, Inc. have released the 2015 Digital Outlook Report.  The report found that only 43 percent of  organizations surveyed had a staff member dedicated to digital and online strategies. Bringing Selma to Students

According to the Chronicle of Philanthropy, “Pop-up Philanthropy” helped eighth graders see the movie “Selma”. Business leaders in New York city raised money and worked with the film’s distributor to arrange special discounted showings. After the success of the New York ‘Selma for Students’ organizers contacted business leaders in other cities and outlined how to bring the event to their city.   Read more...

Winner of Impact Acceleration Award Announced

The Cornerstone OnDemand Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Cornerstone OnDemand, announced the winner of its first Impact Acceleration award, reports Market Watch. Darkness Into Light is this year’s winner. Darkness Into Light, which bring awareness to child sexual abuse, receives two years of free Cornerstone OnDemand learning and access to a host of pro-bono services from Cornerstone.   Read more...

After years of working to build their Facebook audience, nonprofits now find the new algorithms limit their reach, reports the Non-profit Quarterly. Unless they are willing to pay their posts aren’t reaching their entire audience, so many nonprofits are asking Facebook to change their algorithm so nonprofits don’t have to pay to reach their audience. More young tech entrepreneurs are giving to charities while building their fortunes, reports The Chronicle of Philanthropy. For years, many tech entrepreneurs, including Bill Gates, waited until retirement to give to charities, but 2014 saw the founders of both GoPro and WhatsApp giving generously to local charities after the sale of their companies.
